Weekly Newsletter - May 23, 2008
Hi
Hope all is well.
My daughter, her friend, and I went horseback riding the other day.
It was sort of a special treat for my daughter. The ride lasted and
hour and the horses were good. We went through a forest not too far
from our home. It was good to get out in God's creation and see
various aspects of its beauty.
I like horses, though I don't think I want to take care of one all
the time or even part time. As for riding, it either needs to be
real regular or very rare--as I am saddle-sore! For me, it will be
the latter.

Far Above Rubies
"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies"
(Prov. 31:10). The writer goes on to point out the labors,
character, and faith of this virtuous wife.
A recent news report put a price on a stay-at-home mom; $116,805
per year (read the story here). That is worth more than all the
rubies I have! And, for those of us who are blessed to have a
stay-at-home wife, we know how true this is. She has many jobs and
works long hours.
Back to the wise man's point and purpose.
Woman was made for man as a suitable companion (Gen. 2:18-24). It
was God's intent to complement the man with a woman, giving him one
with whom to share life--the trials and triumphs. A man can get
along without a wife, Paul did, but for the great majority of us a
wife is nearly essential.
When a man has a wife like the one described in Proverbs 31, he is
blessed. She is diligent, not lazy; kind, not hateful and bitter;
faith-filled, not faithless. What man would not be helped by such a
wife? Is there really a value that can be put on such a woman? The
wise man's point is that she is priceless.
Some men may complain that their wife is not worth much because she
is not like the virtuous woman. Could it be that he is not a
virtuous man? As the head of the house the man needs to look in the
mirror first. God has given him the responsibility of caring for
his wife, as she is his body (Eph. 5:22-33). He is to dwell with
her with understanding; knowing her nature and tending to her needs
(1 Pet. 3:7). If he does well at this, most women would develop
into the virtuous wife--gladly.
Though society may put a value on a hard-working mother, the truth
is she is priceless. As children and/or husbands, let's take a
moment to let our mothers/wives know we appreciate them.
